Indulgences

 

This stems from a conversation Adi and I were having yesterday. There is absolutely nothing new in this, but I feel many of us forget this and a reminder is needed. If for noone else, I need to write this for myself....as usual it's unfiltered

We are all indulgent.

No, don't even try to deny it.

Indulgence is not just about overspending on luxuries.

 It is mostly understood in that sense, but then what are luxuries and what are necessities?

 Don't we all define things just the way they suit us? 

Buying a huge villa for a small family is an indulgence, spending on expensive clothes, cars, vacations, gadgets, all indulgences...

But who are we to judge anyone on how they spend their money be it hard earned or inherited unless off course it's by illegal means.

 We often judge celebrities based on how much they earn, how much they donate, how rich their lifestyles are. This is a national hobby. Do we know really know them as people, do we know the work they put in, the stress they suffer? I know I am going against popular public opinion but bear with me for some more time. 

The point is we judge

We judge people we don't know anything about, we judge people we think we know based on their social media, we judge people we think we know based on what persona they are showing us, we judge friends, we judge family.

All for what? Based on what our definition is of needs and luxuries and indulgences.

Being born is an indulgence,

So is getting an education,

Staying single is an indulgence so is getting married

Not having kids is an indulgence so is having one or two or a dozen

Staying as a nuclear family is an indulgence so is staying with parents or in-laws.

Leaving a stable job to start a business is an indulgence but so is doing a stable job.

This list can go on

Problem is, getting well-educated, getting married, staying with in-laws, having kids, having a stable job are "society- approved" indulgences so they automatically become the norm. 

Anything beyond the norm becomes an indulgence, becomes self-centred behavior.

Everyone chooses based on what suits their situation, none of us is a saint, when we choose something we compromise on something else and all of us have to live with the results of our choices. 

Again, making new choices is deemed an indulgence but sticking to older choices and not making new ones is also an indulgence! 

The other end of "society- approved" indulgences are "rebel" indulgences. There are a chunk of us who look down upon everything that's society-approved and in the quest to be different we end up creating new norms and stigmas and rigidities. 

Living a simple lifestyle in itself is an indulgence because one chooses to do so. 

Like I said before, none of us is a saint, some indulge in food, some in gadgets, some in homes, some in travel, some in spiritualism, some in living independently, some in living with family.

The question arises that if we all give in to our indulgences what would happen to the less fortunate... There comes the humanity in us, how much can we control ourselves, how much can we help others with and in what ways.

However, no one person can judge another on how, where and why they give in to some indulgences or not. 

This became way to lengthy than it was meant to be.

As always one line sums it up-

Live and let live

But because it's me, I ain't satisfied with one line. So here goes-

Shove your unwanted opinions up your judgemental asses.... Oh and 

Live and let live

Hands that sign national policies

Hands that hammer away on keyboards,

behind the safety of the screens

Hands that just point fingers

Hands that raise colored flags, and

touch the Supremo's feet

and

then

there

are 

the 

real

hands

the hands that build the nation 

the ones who get the least respect

bcos these hands don't directly save lives

or invent vaccines 

or make software

or have viral videos

but they are hands without which

the nation will be handicapped....

 

Perspective

Tall and mighty they stood,

spread out in all their glory

Fronds swaying and rustling

beckoning and enticing 

Eyes wanting to reach them,

craned the neck up 

and up it went, as if placed 

at the end of a puppeteer's thread

Fingers refused to be defeated by fronds

A tap here, a tap there

The mighty palms fell

Incarcerated forever 

in a palm sized machine

Nothing pulled anymore

the neck relaxed

the straining threads cut

as the eyes now victorious

looked down on the mighty palms

held in their palm...

गारवा रिमेक

 

साधारण पाचच्या सुमारास बालकनीत उभी होते,

मिलिंद इंगळे कानात कुजबुजला,

"ऊन जरा जास्तचं आहे",

प्रत्येक मराठी माणूस हे एवढ्या वरून, 

"गारवा" गाऊ लागतो

त्या वरून पाऊस आठवला आणि मग अर्थातच

"ये रे ये रे पावसा, 

तुला देतो पैसा

पैसा झाला खोटा, 

पाऊस आला मोठा"

बोबड्या बोलीत आपण सर्वांनेचं हे गायलंय

थोडक्यात स्वतःचं धुता येत नव्हतं तेव्हापासून,

'पैसा फेक तमाशा देख' डोक्यात बिंबवलं गेलंय,

खोट्या पैसांवरून क्रिपटोकरन्सी आठवलं

आता पावसाला बिटकॉईन द्यावे लागतील

किंवा डॉजेकॉईन, पाहू एलॉन दादाला विचारते

हे आणि असेचं अजून शुल्लक विचार 

डोक्यात चालू होते,

जेव्हा बालकनीच्या एका कोनाड्यात उभी राहून,

वारा खात होते...

झाडे माना डोलवत होती,माझ्याचं प्रमाणे तेही बहुदा

जरा जास्तचं कफ सिरप प्यायले होते...

इंगळ्यांच्या मिलिंदावरून, 

सोमणांचा मिलिंद आठवला

शरीर गार होतचं,

हृदयात पण कसं गारगार वाटू लागलं

काही वेळाने, वारा, सूर्यास्त, डोलणारी झाडे,

नाकातून वाहणारा शेमबुड, खवखवणारा घसा,

सगळं कसं छान एकत्रित आलं होतं

मोगरा, गुलाब, विक्स, आणि बामच्या वासाने

एक जादुई सुगंध निर्माण केला होता

सद्य परिस्थितीत नाकाला गंध घेता येतोय

ह्या सारखा दुसरा आनंद नाही!

"सर्दी झालीय आणि वारा कसला खातेस?!?" 

मिलिंद इंगळेच्या आवाजाला काय झालं?

"जा वाफारा घे आणि कानात कापूस घाल!"

हा तर आईचा आवाज होता

आभाळ मनात दाटलं....

शाळेतल्या कवितांमधली आज्जी आठवते का?!?

भरपूर लाड करणारी, सतत खाऊ देणारी, 

सगळे हट्ट पुरवणारी...

आमची आज्जी तशी नव्हती बरं का,

कारण मुळात ती आमची आज्जी नव्हतीच

ती आमची "आई" होती

काव्यात्मक म्हणत नाहीय

मध्यम वर्गीय पालकांना नोकरी करणं भाग होतं

लहानचं मोठं आईनेचं केलं

फक्त जन्माला तेवढं घातलं नाही तिने आम्हाला

आम्ही सगळी भावंडं तिला आईचं म्हणायचो

त्यामुळे कवितेतल्या आज्जी सारखं सतत लाड करत राहणं इतकं सोप्पं आज्जीपण नव्हतं तिच!

साम, दाम, दंड, भेद असे सर्व उपाय ती वापरत

गरजेप्रमाणे डोक्यावर मायेचा हात 

आणि गरजेप्रमाणे त्याचं हाताने पाठीवर धपाटा!

चार नातवंड मोठी करणं, त्यात दोन एकाचं वयाची

खरचं त्यावेळी तिला नोबेल शांतता पुरस्कारासाठी 

नामांकित करायला हवं होतं  

आणि हो, आम्हाला भले दमदाटी करून 

शिस्त लावत असेल, 

पण चुकून का कोणी बाहेरचं 

तिच्या पिल्लांना काही बोललं 

तर मग काही खरं नाही!

आजोबा खूप लवकर वारले,

त्यात आई तरुणपणी आजारी असतं, 

पण मानसिक बळ मात्र थोर,

अर्थात मुलांची, लेकिसुनांची साथ होतीच

पण तिचा आशावाद आणि तिच्या जिद्यीने तिने शहाण्णव वर्षाच्या आयुष्यात प्रत्येक अडचणीवर मात केली!

विचार करा, गावात वाढलेली, 

अगदी प्रार्थमिक शिक्षण झालेली एक तरुण मुलगी,

त्या काळानुसार लवकर लग्न झालं,

मग मुंबई सारख्या शहरात सौंसार मांडणं, 

सामाजिक कामात पुढारी असलेल्या नवऱ्याला साथ देणं, सतत पाहुण्यांची उठबस करणं , 

भावा भाच्यांना आईसारखं सांभाळणं 

काय नाही केलं तिने?!?

मला आठवतंय आमच्या लहानपणी, 

मराठी पेपरच्या हेडलाईन्स वाचायची, 

अभिमानाने सांगायची की आजोबांने शिकवलं. कागदपत्रांवर स्वतःची सही केली 

की तिच्या डोळ्यात वेगळीच चमक यायची. 

अगदी आता आता पर्यंत थरथरत्या हाताने का होईना

 सही करायची.

त्यात बदलत्या काळानुसार ती स्वतःला बदलत गेली. 

चुली पासून स्टोव्ह ते शेगडी, 

रेडिओ पासून टीव्ही ते कॉम्प्युटर,

रोटरी फोन पासून कॉर्डलेस ते मोबाईल, 

शहाण्णव वर्षात असे अनेक बदल तिने पाहिले 

आणि स्वीकारले, उत्साहाने शिकून घेतले.

 हा प्रोफाईलला लावलेला फोटो माझ्या खास आवडीचा कारण गच्चीत फिरतांना मी फोटो काढत होते 

तर स्वतः म्हणाली चल सेल्फी काढुया! 

कँडिड फोटोसवर मात्र जाम चिडायची, 

मला सांगून काढ म्हणायची आणि 

पदर सावरून, बॉर्डर सरळ करून, ताठ बसून 

मग काढायला परवानगी द्यायची. 

बाकी सगळे बदल स्वीकारले असले 

तरी नऊवारी मात्र शेवटपर्यंत नेसली. 

आता झेपत नाही मॅकसी घाल, किमान सहावारी नेस, 

सगळं सांगून झालं पण एक वाक्य ठरलेलं

"झेपतय तोवर करायचं". 

ह्याचं वाक्याच्या जोरावर 

फक्त नऊवारी टापटीप नेसणे, 

मॅचिंग ब्लॉउस घालणे, 

कडक काष्टा काढणे, इतकचं नाही तर

स्वतःची नऊवार स्वतः हाताने धुऊन वाळत घालायची! सुनांचा आग्रह झाला, बायका ठेऊन झाल्या

पण तिला काही पटेना. 

हौस आणि टापटीपणा काही विचारू नका, 

नऊवारी उंचीला चांगली हवी, 

कापड मऊ हवं,

रंग उठून दिसायला हवा,

ब्लॉउस परफेक्ट मॅचिंग हवं, 

साडीचं केळं जरा लहानमोठं झालं तर पुन्हा नेसायची! हातात पाटल्या, 

गळ्यात जोंधळी पोत व पोवळ्याची माळ, 

कानात कुड्या आणि साखळ्या...

माहेरच्या दर फेरीला,

माझ्या कडून ब्लॉउस मॅच करून घ्यायची, 

"हा वापरून वापरून एक शेड लाईट झाला 

आहे का" वगैरे विचारायची.

मी आयुष्यात कधी मॅचिंग ब्लॉउस घातला नाही त्यामुळे मनातल्या मनात हसू यायचं.

मला कायम म्हणायची -

"हे काय भूताटक्या सारखे केस सोडले आहेस, 

नीट विंचर, गळा मोकळा ठेऊ नये" इत्यादी...

मला चित्रविचित्र दागिने आवडतात, 

तसचं एकदा घातलं होतं तर आई म्हणाली - 

"हे काय बैलाचा गळ्यात घालतात तसं घातलं आहेस!"

तिच्या तारुण्याच्या अनेक आठवणी 

ती आम्हाला सांगत

अगदी बाबा, काकांने कश्यावरून मार खाल्लाय, 

आजोबा कसे आत्यासाठी फ्रॉक शिवतं

त्या पासून 

आजोबाने थिएटरला कुठले पिचर दाखवले ईथपर्यंत. 

आजोबांबद्दल इतक्या गोष्टी सांगितल्या आहेत

की त्यांना आम्ही प्रत्यक्ष भेटलोय असं वाटतं. 

ठोकरच्या चाळीतली खोली, 

मुंबईत कुठेकुठे फिरली आहे, 

गावचं बालपण, तिचं लग्न, 

सुनांच्या बघण्याचे कार्यक्रम, 

एक ना अनेक आठवणी सांगितल्या आहेत. 

कुठलाच बोध शब्दात न मांडता 

ती ह्या आठवणीनंमधून अप्रत्यक्षपणे सांगत....

नातसून, नात जावई, ह्यांनाही आमच्या इतकचं प्रेम केलं, नातवंडांसारखचं वागवलं

पण पणतींसाठी मात्र खास माया होती. 

अगदी शेवटच्या क्षणापर्यंत,

त्यांची काळजी घ्या हे सांगत होती.

तिची माया ही फक्त आमच्या पुरता मर्यादित नसून, नातेवाईकांपासून शेजाऱ्यांपर्यंत सगळ्यांची ती आई होती. 

लग्न झाल्यावर सुद्धा कायम तिच्या समोर नसले

तरी तिचं बरोबर लक्ष असायचं. 

एकदा सुरवातीच्या काळात माहेरी गेली असतांना,

तिने माझी पाण्याची बाटली उघडून पहिली. 

मग म्हणाली "बूच स्वछ आहे, खाच्यांमध्ये सुद्धा मळ नाहीय म्हणजे घर नीटनेटकं ठेवत अशील!"

अशी ती शितावरून भाताची परीक्षा पहायची

माझ्या कडे मोशीला आली तेव्हा,

कचराकुंडीच्या झाकणापासून ते 

बालकनीतल्या कुंड्यातल्या झाडांपर्यंत

सगळं बारकाईने तपासलं.

पुण्याच्या एका फेरीत,

स्वातीच्या लग्नाची खरेदी करायचं ठरलं. 

सकाळी साधारण दहा ते रात्री आठ 

अक्खा लक्ष्मी रोड पालथा घातला, 

अगदी लग्नाच्या शालू पासून, नऊवारी 

ते देण्याघेण्याच्या साड्यांपर्यंत

ह्यात पुढारी अर्थातच सावित्री कर्ले 

आणि पूर्ण वेळ उत्साह तितकाचं. 

आठच्या सुमारास ड्रायव्हरला फोन केला,

गाडी घेऊन यायला, तेव्हा त्यानेही अचंबित होऊन

विचारले- "त्या आज्जी अक्खा दिवस

तुमच्या सोबत खरेदी करत होत्या?!?"

त्या नंतर हॉटेलमध्ये जेवण झालं, 

सगळेच दमले होते म्हणून पटकन बिल मागवलं 

तर आई म्हणाली "आईस्क्रिम कुठलंय विचार!"

आईस्क्रीमची खूपच आवड होती तिला.

काही वर्षांपूर्वी पर्यंत कॉर्ननेटो खायची,

काजू बदाम चोखुन बाजूला करुन. 

नंतर मात्र कप आईस्क्रिम वर आली. 

असाचं एक तिचा उत्साह, धमक, आणि कुतूहल

दाखवणारा प्रसंग म्हणजे,

जेव्हा अम्ही तिला देहू व त्रिवेणी संगमला नेले. 

एखाद्या ठिकाणी जरा जास्त चालणं आहे

किंवा पायऱ्या आहेत तिथे पुढे नको येउस म्हटलं 

तर ती कसलं काय ऐकतेय!

सगळं फिरली, अगदी इंद्रायणीत बोटींग सुद्धा केली. 

एक तरुण जोडपं होतं 

आणि ती मुलगी बोटीला घाबरत होती

तर ही खमकी म्हातारी तिला सांगते 

"अगं मी बसलेय तर तू काय घाबरतेस!' 

एकदा बोलता बोलता म्हणाली,

अजून काय तो मॉल नाही पाहिला. 

आदित्यने लगेच गाडी काढली 

आणि आई, मम्मा व बाबांना घेउन 

गोरेगावच्या ओबेरॉय मॉलला गेलो. 

तिने भरपूर प्रश्न विचारले, 

सगळी माहिती हवी होती तिला. 

प्रत्येल दुकानात डोकावून पाहिलं. 

वरच्या माळ्यावर जायला 

तिला म्हटलं लिफ्टने जाऊ 

तर हिला एस्कलेटरने जायचं होतं!! 

एकतर आधी फिरता जिन्हा सांगून समाधान नाही, एस्कलेटर बोलायला शिकली 

आणि मग म्हणे न्या मला धरुन. 

ही अगदी बिंदास, आमच्याचं पोटात गोळा!

दोन एक तास मॉल फिरून झाल्यावर 

घरी परतायला निघालो तर 

आदित्य सहज म्हणाला दादरला जायचं का आईकडे,

ही एका पायावर तयार! 

मम्मा बाबा म्हणाले आम्ही दमलो आणि रिकशाने परतले. आम्ही कूच केली दादरच्या दिशेने. 

त्या पोपटलाल चाळीचे लाकडी जिने चडून ही गेली

केवळ नातीचं सासर पाहायचं म्हणून.

असे आईचे एक ना अनेक किस्से आहेत...

फार विचार न करता,

मनात येईल तसं लिहीत गेले, 

अजून खूप आठवणी आहेत, 

तिच्या व्यक्तिमत्वाचे अनेक पैलू आहेत...

तिच्या आठवणी तर कायम मनात राहतील पण

तिचा आशावाद, 

तिचा खंबीरपणा, 

तिचा ताठ कणा, 

आयुष्याने टाकलेल्या प्रत्येक बॉउन्सरवर

मात करायची क्षमता 

ह्यातलं किमान एक टक्का जरी 

आत्मसात करता आलं तर 

तिचं तिला खरी आदरांजली होय...

"Lock down" my butt!

The ducks look so lonely
spotlighted rockstars
aglow under the abendrot sky
centre stage
but lonely...
The gloom is evident
they are performers after all!
Life without entertaining others
is just empty for them.
Even the view is not pretty!
Who in heaven's name would like to keep staring at their friend's butt all day long?!?
It's not like they can turn their heads or anything
Agreed the butts are kind of a part of their permanent view, but there is so much more to go with that normally!
For starters there are other butts,
you know, little butts clad in bright colors
most caked with dirt
Then there are the tiny arms and
smiling faces attached somewhere above those butts
The laughs and shouts
and the utter exhilaration
their audience feels because of them!
That's what makes their lives worthwhile
You, as an observer may think they are kinda stupid
You know going round and round, following each other's butts but not really going anywhere
But, they have a jolly good time
pandering to all the innocence and
even naughtiness surrounding them, riding them
It does get dizzy sometimes when the
the lil ones are high on sugar or high on just plain old life
Those are times when a quick rest is no more an option
Ohh but they would give their right arm (if they had one) for those days now!
Never before did it bother them
that they had wings but couldn't fly
But no small butts land on them anymore
no sweaty, sticky palms coat their wings,
no one's slapping their butts to get them moving
no laughter, no shrieks, no more dizzy spells
Oh how lucky are those humans
who can move all their limbs and look around
Getting to see so much more than each other's butts!

An Intoxicating Afternoon

Heat,
unbearable heats,
sizzles through him.
Parched as a desert
his thirst burns him raw.
As need smoulders through him,
he peels away the layers
and opens the divine gift before him.
As he sees the moist, fleshy
feast laid out for him,
he can hardly wait to pounce
and pounce he does!
Licking
Nibbling
Tasting
Juices
Sticky
Sweet
Tangy
dripping from his lips
coating his chin
as he slurps the luscious mix
from the cavernous space.
Decadent flavours
almost licentious
The more he bites,
the more he explores,
the more the sweetness pours out.
He can't have enough of it!

oranges and
grapes
finally quench his parched throat...
Tasting summer fruits
is truly an orgasmic experience!
